What Is the PPI?
The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. Unlike the CPI, which measures prices from the consumer's perspective, the PPI measures price changes from the seller's/manufacturer's perspective — making it a leading indicator of consumer inflation.
PPI vs. CPI
- PPI measures prices at the wholesale/production stage; CPI measures retail prices.
- PPI changes typically filter through to CPI with a lag of several months.
- Rising PPI often signals future CPI increases as producers pass cost increases to consumers.
Components of PPI
PPI covers three stages of production: crude goods (raw materials), intermediate goods (partially processed), and finished goods. Each stage provides early warning signals about inflationary pressures building in the supply chain.
Market Significance
PPI data is released monthly and closely watched by the Federal Reserve and bond markets. Unexpectedly high PPI readings can push yields higher and pressure equities, particularly in consumer-facing sectors where companies cannot easily pass costs through.
