What Is the Head and Shoulders Pattern?
The head and shoulders is one of the most recognizable and reliable chart patterns in technical analysis. It consists of three peaks: a left shoulder, a higher central peak (the head), and a right shoulder of roughly equal height to the left. The pattern typically signals a reversal from an uptrend to a downtrend.
Structure of the Pattern
- Left shoulder: Price rallies to a high, then retreats.
- Head: Price rallies to a higher high, then retreats to the neckline.
- Right shoulder: Price rallies again but fails to reach the head's high, then falls.
- Neckline: The support level connecting the lows between the peaks. A break below confirms the pattern.
Inverse Head and Shoulders
The inverse (or "reverse") version appears at market bottoms and signals a transition from downtrend to uptrend. The structure is the same but inverted.
Measuring the Target
The projected decline after a neckline break is typically equal to the distance from the head to the neckline, applied downward from the breakout point.
