What Is Short Interest?
Short interest refers to the total number of shares that have been sold short — borrowed and sold in the open market — but not yet repurchased (covered) by short sellers. It is reported bi-monthly in the US and represents the aggregate bearish bet against a stock.
Key Metrics
- Short interest (shares): Raw number of shares sold short.
- Short interest as % of float: The most useful measure — how much of the tradeable supply is shorted. Above 20% is considered high.
- Days to cover (short ratio): Short interest divided by average daily volume. Indicates how many days it would take shorts to cover at normal volume.
Short Squeezes
