What Is Earnings Guidance?
Guidance refers to a company's own projections for its future financial performance. Management typically provides guidance during earnings calls or investor day presentations, giving analysts and investors a benchmark for the coming quarters.
Types of Guidance
- Revenue guidance: Expected sales for the next quarter or fiscal year.
- EPS guidance: Estimated earnings per share.
- Operating margin guidance: Expected profitability range.
- Full-year vs. next-quarter guidance: Companies may provide one or both.
Why Guidance Moves Markets
Even if a company beats past earnings, weak forward guidance can send shares sharply lower. Investors price stocks on future expectations, not past performance. A guidance raise (raising the bar) is a bullish signal; a guidance cut is often punished severely.
No-Guidance Companies
Some companies, like Berkshire Hathaway, intentionally do not provide guidance, arguing it creates short-term thinking. Others provide guidance ranges rather than precise figures to manage expectations.
