What Is Dollar-Cost Averaging?
Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is an investment strategy where an investor divides their total intended investment into equal periodic purchases over time, regardless of the asset's price. By investing a fixed dollar amount on a schedule (weekly, monthly, etc.), you automatically buy more shares when prices are low and fewer when prices are high.
How DCA Works
Suppose you invest $500 per month in a stock. When the price is $50, you buy 10 shares. When it drops to $25, you buy 20 shares. Over time, your average cost per share is lower than the average of all the prices you paid.
Benefits of DCA
- Removes emotional decision-making — you invest systematically regardless of fear or greed.

Limitations
