What Is the Current Ratio?
The current ratio is a fundamental liquidity metric that assesses whether a company has enough short-term assets to cover its short-term liabilities. It is one of the first checks analysts perform when evaluating a company's financial health.
Current Ratio = Current Assets / Current Liabilities
Current assets include cash, receivables, and inventory. Current liabilities include accounts payable, short-term debt, and accrued expenses.
Interpreting the Current Ratio
- Above 2.0: Strong liquidity; the company can comfortably meet short-term obligations.
- 1.0–2.0: Generally healthy; adequate coverage.

Limitations
